An arachnoid cyst (AC) is a fluid space contained between doubled layers of arachnoid mater. The majority of ACs are detected accidentally and usually remain clinically silent. Sometimes arachnoid cysts manifest in the form of acute intracranial hypertension or they coexist with a whole spectrum of nonspecific symptoms, as headache, epilepsy, psychomotor retardation. In the case of acute intracranial hypertension, the indications for the surgical procedure are clear, while in the second case, without the symptoms of acute intracranial hypertension, they are still a subject of discussion. The subject of this doctoral dissertation was to to develop algorithms for diagnostic process in children with middle cranial fossa arachnoid cysts, based on the following components: radiological, neurosurgical, neurological and neuropsychological. Each of these components could be an indication for surgical treatment. Own experience, based on cases treated in Children's University Hospital, was presented in the form of publications in scientific journals. They included rare complications in the form of bleeding into the AC, difficulties in qualifying children with AC for surgical treatment and a case study concerning a patient treated surgically for arachnoid cysts, with disorders of cognitive functions.
