Title: Prevalence and selected risk factors for adverse events in a specialist hospital
Abstract:
The aim of this study was to assess the incidence of selected adverse events and selected risk factors for adverse events at J. Dietl Specialist Hospital in Krakow. MATERIAL AND METHODS.The subject of the study was the records of patients hospitalized in J. Dietl Specialist Hospital in Krakow in 2013-2020, in whom an adverse event was recorded. After verification of all cards, 1272 Adverse Event Registration Cards were finally analysed in detail. Using the IBM SPSS Statistics package version 26, analysis of basic descriptive statistics was performed. For quantitative variables, the Mann-Whitney U test was used, while for qualitative variables, the chi-square test or Fisher's exact test was used, depending on whether it was parametric or non-parametric. RESULTS.The study found a significantly higher age of the study group than the control group. Our study showed a statistically significant difference between nursing care category II (patients requiring moderate care) and the incidence of adverse events. People in the study group were shown to stay longer in hospital than those in the control group.Our study showed no statistically significant difference between the month of the year and the recording of an adverse event. However, when analysing the time of day of recorded adverse events, most were observed in the morning and least at midday.Detailed analysis showed that the time ; of the event was closely related to the type of adverse event. Our study showed a statistically significant relationship between the number of drugs taken during hospitalisation and the occurrence of adverse events. A correlation between comorbidities and the occurrence of adverse events was also confirmed. Our study also showed a statistically significant relationship between balance disorders, hearing impairment and memory impairment and the incidence of adverse events.
