Title: Perioperative lifestyle and nutritional interventions applied for improving and maintaining long-term results in patients undergoing bariatric surgery : assessment of efficacy, reporting, and prevailing practices

Abstract:

The aim of this dissertation was to evaluate perioperative lifestyle and nutritional interventions applied for improving and maintaining long-term results in patients undergoing bariatric surgery in terms of their efficacy, reporting, and prevailing practices. The scientific data identified through the systematic review and meta-analysis is limited; however, indicate possible benefit of: a) physical activity, nonvitamin nutritional interventions, vitamin and mineral supplementation, and counseling in the 6-month postoperative period; b) physical activity, nonvitamin nutritional interventions, vitamin and mineral supplementation, psychotherapy, and counseling in the 12-month postoperative period; and c) psychotherapy and counseling in the >12-month postoperative period. However, the evidence is of low to very low-certainty. A cross-sectional methodological study evaluating the completeness of the descriptions of the interventions analyzed in the randomized trials indicated it to be suboptimal, which limits replication of the interventions by other clinicians. The survey assessing the extent of implementation of Polish perioperative care standards for patients undergoing bariatric surgery by Polish surgical centers revealed that the implementation is moderately good. The surveyed centers ensure the participation of a multidisciplinary team in the perioperative care process, demon ; strating attention to providing access to dietitian and psychologist consultations. However, it would be beneficial to increase access to these consultations in the postoperative period.
