Tytuł: The impact of bariatric and metabolic surgery on premature aging processes in patients with obesity

Abstrakt:

Obesity, a growing global health challenge, is associated with the accumulation of low-grade chronic inflammation. The resulting tissue degeneration and development of comorbidities resembłe the processes observed in aging. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of obesity and metabolic bariatric surgery on biological aging markers, including telomere length, inflammation, DNA damage, metabolic age, and cognitive function. In a combination of cross-sectional and prospective cohort studies, over 100 patients ąualified for laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) or Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) were assessed, alongside healthy control groups. The influence of obesity severity and associated comorbidities on aging markers was analyzed, as well as changes in these markers two years post-surgery. The results showed that obesity is associated with shorter telomeres, higher levels of inflammation, and increased metabolic age. Bariatric surgery significantly improved these parameters- regardless of the clinical weight-loss outcome. These fmdings suggest that surgical treatment may reduce features of premature aging, highlighting its role not only in weight reduction but also in slowing down aging-related biological processes.
