Title: Evaluation of the association between COVID-19 pandemic and cardiovascular disease risk factors

Abstract:

The COVID-19 pandemic significantly affected access to medical care. Patients with cardiovascular disease risk factors had limited control, which may have resulted in inadequate modification of chronic treatment. This dissertation examined the relationship between COVID-19 pandemic and cardiovascular disease risk factors, with a focus on hypertension. The first study showed that established cardiovascular disease, rather than its risk factors, significantly affects short- and long-term mortality from COVID-19. The results of the second study showed that the effectiveness of hypotensive treatment in the pre-pandemic period led to an improvement in hypertension phenotypes, while this effect was not observed during the pandemic period. The series of publications that formed the basis of the dissertation highlighted the importance of adequate hypertension control, as suboptimal hypotensive treatment can lead to the development of cardiovascular disease, which increases the risk of death from SARS-CoV-2 infection, and emphasized the need for increased medical surveillance and access to health care during global events such as the pandemic.
